Phil Thompson
Phil Thompson is a Brooklyn-based composer and pianist. His music explores the boundary between texture and harmony, structures based on arbitrary transformations, and creative misunderstandings of traditional tonality.
Phil has worked with various ensembles and musicians across the country, including Sandbox Percussion, the JACK Quartet, the Astra Collective, the Mannes Orchestra, Gabriel Cabezas, Athos Malestrom, Patrick Flannery, and the Exponential Ensemble. In May 2026, he produced and premiered several new works at his graduation recital, Music from Orion Ridge; his music has also been heard at the New York New Music Intensive, the Mannes Composers Concert Series, and Operation Opera. He recently received his Master’s degree in Composition from the New School, where he studied with Nina Shekhar.
Phil is a professional engraver, a pianist, a music teacher, and has worked in fundraising for Juilliard, the Metropolitan Opera, and the New School. He eagerly awaits the return of a professional basketball team to Seattle.
